Man Injured While Attempting to Climb Geneva’s Massive Fountain

The Jet d’Eau fountain, one of Geneva’s most well-known sights, was approached too closely by a young man who had to be transported to the hospital.

The unidentified person was injured after being launched into the air by the power of the water and landing on the concrete below. Currently, it’s unclear what the man’s condition is. According to the business that manages it, the Jet d’Eau can project water at a rate of 500 liters (110 gallons) per second, reaching a height of up to 140 meters (459 feet).

The man allegedly climbed over the walls surrounding the fountain, as reported by the Swiss publication 20 Minutes. He is believed to be in his 20s. Initially, he attempted to put his face on the water pump’s nozzle but was instead knocked backward. He then made another attempt and was propelled upward by the force of the water before tumbling onto a neighboring sidewalk. Subsequently, the man jumped into Lake Geneva before being discovered by the police, who had been informed by bystanders and was then taken to the hospital.

One witness told 20 Minutes that the police arrived and requested the Jet d’Eau be turned off immediately so that they could retrieve the man. According to reports, SIG, the power company that owns and operates the fountain, will file a trespassing case against the individual. The BBC has contacted SIG for a response. As one of the tallest fountains in the world, the Jet d’Eau has been a popular tourist destination in Geneva for almost 130 years
