Man Detained in connection with Uranium cargo mail at Heathrow Airport – UK

A man in his 60s has been detained in connection with an investigation into the finding of uranium traces in a cargo shipment at London’s Heathrow Airport, according to a statement released by the UK Metropolitan Police on Sunday.

The individual was detained on suspicion of a terror offense on Saturday and later freed on bail while the police conducted their investigation, according to the police.

In a package that arrived at Heathrow Airport on December 29, a very small amount of uranium was found. Despite the arrest, the event “does not appear to be linked to any direct threat to the public,” according to Richard Smith, chief of London police’s Counter Terrorism Command.

A suspect was taken to a police station in northwest England yesterday after officers responded to a call at an address in Cheshire. He was later freed on bail today until an event in April.

Uranium is a vital component of nuclear weapons and can be used for scientific research as well as for the production of electricity for use in society. The metal itself is poisonous if consumed or inhaled, and certain of its isotopes produce radiation that may be detrimental to people.

Following the discovery of uranium in a package of scrap metal destined for a freight shed by scanning technology, the Metropolitan Police Service declared last week that an investigation had been opened.

According to the Guardian, the item, which had its origins in Pakistan, was transported to Heathrow in the cargo hold of an Oman Air aircraft arriving from Muscat. The shipment was reportedly destined for an Iranian company with offices in the United Kingdom. The shipment’s origin in Pakistan has been rejected by the Pakistani authorities.
