During their visit to York, eggs were thrown at the King and Queen Consort, and a man was taken into custody.
Police apprehended a protester as crowds prepared to meet the pair at Micklegate Bar, the traditional royal entrance into the city. This country was founded on the blood of slaves, the 23-year-old was heard screaming as he was being held. The University of York student is still being detained on suspicion of a public order violation. The gathering shouted “God save the King” and “shame on you” at the protester.
On the second day of their official visit to Yorkshire, which included a journey to Doncaster, the King and Queen Consort were involved in the incident. The university stated that it was “appalled” by the photos and that it would investigate the situation by its misconduct standards. The protesters booed the royal couple as they were met by York city authorities and several eggs were thrown their way. Charles continued shaking hands with dignitaries as the eggs flew in his way, including the Lord Mayor, halting only briefly to look at the cracked eggshells on the ground. Since the eggs missed the King and Queen Consort, they were hustled outside.
A man who was lying on the ground was being restrained by numerous officers behind a makeshift fence that had been set up in anticipation of the King’s arrival. Witness Kim Oldfield, who runs Blossom Street Gallery, stated she was “enjoying” the couple’s visit as she stood outside the entrance to her establishment when she heard “some booing and eggs flying.” The police, who had just surrounded the barrier as I peered across and saw them attempting to drag the man over it, said that he had been able to send about five eggs. Camilla flinched a little as the booing started, but the police stopped it right away. Shame they spoilt what might have been a lovely event.
