After meeting Mary, a Canadian woman in her seventies, on Facebook, 35-year-old Naeem Shahzad of Pakistan became an internet sensation.
Social media users questioned their union and called Naeem a “gold-digger” for marrying the older woman to obtain a Canadian passport. Nevertheless, in an interview with Urdu Point, the couple made it clear that they tied the knot due to their deep affection for each other. Naeem claimed that the couple first met in 2012, and after discussing marriage in 2015, they eventually tied the knot in 2017. In response to criticism that he is a gold-digger, Naeem said he married Mary because she supported him in every way after he struggled with depression and other mental health problems. He added that he could open up to Mary, and that’s when he fell in love with her.
“I’m not a gold digger,” Naeem said. “You can tell that we don’t have anything opulent in our home because you’re in it. We have the essentials, like a sofa set for when visitors arrive. We brought our own beds from home. People should be free to express themselves.” Naeem continued by saying that while relying on Mary’s pension to make ends meet, he and Mary do not lead extravagant lives in Canada. Naeem mentioned, “At this moment, the individuals who hold the utmost significance in my life are my spouse, my mother, and my brother ” He went on to say that although he was prepared to hear accusations that he was a gold-digger before the marriage, he was no longer bothered by it.
Naeem disclosed that his wife had returned to Pakistan after a six-year absence, and the couple intends to support themselves by running a YouTube channel called ‘Beast Brother’s PK.’ They are planning to split their time between Pakistan and Canada, spending six months in each country. This instance of an online romance blossoming into a marriage is part of a growing trend of foreign women marrying Pakistani men. In a similar recent case, a woman from Sweden traveled to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to wed 23-year-old Ahmed, whom she had connected with on Facebook.
