LHC Releases Written Order for Extension in Winter Vacation

Due to the persistent pollution, the Lahore High Court (LHC) mandated a seven-day extension of the winter break for all Lahore educational institutions.

On December 14, the Punjab School Education Department declared that all public and private schools in the province will be closed from December 24 to December 31. As a measure to assist reduce smog in Lahore, the LHC instructed officials last week to suggest to the school education department the implementation of a two-week winter break. The court had previously ordered that schools close on Fridays and Saturdays.

School and college breaks should be extended due to the ongoing haze, according to Justice Shahid Kareem of the LHC, who was hearing public interest petitions on various environmental issues today. A PEMRA representative who was present during the hearing informed the court that letters had been sent to satellite channels asking them to show advertisements encouraging smog awareness and avoidance. The court observed that the pollution was mostly under control. It did, however, establish that smog prevention fell under government jurisdiction.

The director general of the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority was additionally called to the witness stand before the judge at the ensuing session. The proceeding was postponed until January 6. The Lahore deputy commissioner recently gave the court a report with suggestions for reducing smog. According to the report, the Punjab government had already given the go-ahead for a scheme to buy 200 drone cameras as part of a World Bank-funded initiative. Modern drones with night-vision cameras, according to the article, might be programmed to record smoke emissions even at night.

According to the paper, long-range PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras can automatically identify and record some emissions from distances of up to 3,000 meters without requiring human intervention. At pollution hotspots in Lahore, such as Mehmood Booti, Karol Ghati, Lakhodair, Turkey Road, Ring Road, Multan Road, and Bund Road, it was suggested that PTZ cameras be installed. Additionally, it recommended increasing the number of field posts and setting up at least ten air quality monitoring stations throughout the city to ensure that government regulations are carried out effectively. According to the research, urban green areas should be used to clean the air and lessen “fugitive dust” in the city, however, the Parks and Horticulture Authority has been concentrating more on aesthetic plants.
