Legal Victory: News Anchor Saima Mohsin Gains Right to Sue CNN for Damages

On Tuesday, journalist Saima Mohsin, a British-Pakistani, won a part of her legal battle with Cable News Network (CNN) over racial discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Mohsin posted on X, the replacement for Twitter, saying, “I won! Against CNN, I prevailed in court.” Additionally, she stated that her case involving unfair dismissal, disability, discrimination, and equal pay would be heard in London by the employment tribunal. “I appreciate your help very much. Really, it has been a big support to me during this,” she continued.

Mohsin’s case can now move forward to a full tribunal at the London Central Employment Tribunal after Judge Klimov made a favorable decision following a preliminary hearing last month, according to Deadline. The specific hearing date has not yet been scheduled. After suffering serious injuries while on duty in Israel, Mohsin launched a case against the news organization for racial discrimination and unjust dismissal. While covering the Israel-Palestine conflict from Jerusalem, the reporter was involved in an accident that left her crippled, as reported by The Guardian. Since the event in 2014, when her cameraman ran over her foot with a car and caused extensive tissue damage, she has been unable to sit, stand, walk, or return to work full-time.

In the aftermath of the distressing incident, she pleaded with the media outlet to move her into a physically less taxing position and provide support for recuperation, but CNN outright refused. She also claims that she asked CNN if she could switch to a presenting job to reduce travel time, but was told “You don’t have the style we are looking for,” according to The Guardian. CNN dismissed her three years later. Following her life-altering injuries, the reporter decided to file an employment tribunal claim after CNN declined to support her. “I dedicated significant energy towards progressing in my profession and absolutely loved my time employed at CNN in the role of an international correspondent.”

“While working for CNN, I repeatedly put my life in danger because I thought they would support me. They didn’t,” she averred. While at CNN, Mohsin asserted that she encountered instances of both racial and disability bias, along with gender-based wage inequality. Additionally, the former CNN reporter claimed that even when she was ready to go live on the ground, the managers gave more air time to white American correspondents than to her.
