A startling event unfolded when a man filed a complaint against a restaurant in Bengaluru, India’s consumer court, for selling chicken biryani without any chicken.
The incident involved a man named Krishnappa and his wife who reportedly ordered chicken biryani at a restaurant in April 2023. They then carried the package home, only to find that there was no meat included in the biryani rice when they opened it. Despite the restaurant owner’s promise to replace the order within a few minutes, Krishnappa called the establishment immediately to complain about the missing meat. However, even after two hours, the fresh package had not arrived.
Frustrated by the lack of response from the owner, Krishnappa decided to issue a formal notice to the restaurant by sending legal documents. Although he received no response, he proceeded to take the matter to the consumer court, seeking Rs 60,000 in compensation. Without employing a lawyer, Krishnappa presented his case independently, offering photographic evidence of the unsatisfactory biryani. He asserted that he and his wife experienced ‘mental agony’ due to their inability to prepare food that day.
Acknowledging his argument, the judges stated that the restaurant, whether knowingly or unknowingly, failed to provide adequate services to the customer. Consequently, the city consumer court ruled that the restaurant must pay Rs. 2000 as compensation for the ‘mental agony’ inflicted on the customer, in addition to refunding the cost of the meal.
