Karachi: Gang Caught Red-Handed Selling Fake Platelet Units

Officials with the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) have apprehended a group that was selling inhabitants of Karachi phony mega and manual units of platelets.

The suspected ringleader of a fraud gang and his accomplice were apprehended in Jinnah Hospital after the SBTA officials caught them in the act. Additionally, the investigators were able to get an audio recording of the con artists discussing the sale of phony mega and manual units. According to medical professionals, the transfusion of phony mega or manual units of platelets could expose patients to infectious infections. The gang members were heard in the audio clip proposing to sell the mega unit of platelets for Rs. 32,000 without needing any blood donors.

They requested an advance payment from the client in addition to a blood sample, and they will later deliver the platelet unit to the hospital. The action was taken by SBTA officials against the fraudsters’ gang that was putting patients’ lives in danger by buying and selling fake platelet units illegally. Pak-Blood Bank was not listed among the registered blood banks, according to SBTA. To file a complaint against the accused, the officials of the health department also traveled to the police station. As hospitals continue to struggle with a shortage of platelet units as a result of the increasing number of Dengue patients, there had been reports of bogus platelets being sold earlier this month as well.

In a separate incident, police in India on Friday night uncovered a group selling phony platelets and plasma and detained ten of its members in the city. They were found to have 18 plasma bags, 3 allegedly bogus platelet pouches, Rs. 1,025,000, 13 mobile phones, and 3 two-wheelers. Laboratory testing has been requested for the plasma and platelets. After a 36-year-old man allegedly passed away on October 17 as a result of receiving the incorrect platelets, the action was taken. After hearing from his family that the platelet he received was extremely thin and made of “mosambi” juice, the district government ordered a high-level investigation into the situation. Brajesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister and minister of health, acknowledged the killing and promised that those found responsible will face harsh punishment.
