Islamabad’s Green Initiative: Transformative Step as Over 146 KM of Dedicated Cycling Lanes Announced for Eco-Friendly Travel

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has declared its commitment to implementing the ‘Cycling as an Alternative Transport’ initiative.

The civic authority intends to create more than 146 kilometers of dedicated cycling lanes throughout the federal capital as part of this project. The primary goals are to diminish the carbon footprint and alleviate traffic congestion. The CDA has emphasized that the development of a protected path will specifically facilitate the usage of this track by female and senior citizens. The planned construction of bicycle lanes in Islamabad will occur in three phases, with the entire project slated for completion by February 2025.

The initial phase, scheduled for February and March of the following year, will focus on establishing bicycle lanes along Jinnah Avenue, Margalla Road, G-7, and G-6. During the second phase, bicycle lanes will be extended to cover the remaining 14 sectors and major avenues in Islamabad from May to November. In the subsequent and final stage, slated for December 2024 to February 2025, dedicated cycling lanes will be established along the Srinagar Highway and Islamabad Expressway, extending up to PWD. Additionally, as part of this phase, the authority intends to introduce electric bikes.

A collaboration with a private company is in the works to offer electric bike rentals at 72 locations across the city. These electric bikes will travel along signal-free roads in designated lanes, maintaining a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has prepared a PC-I for the project, estimating the total cost to be Rs. 1.5 billion. The CDA board is scheduled to discuss and deliberate on the project in its meeting tomorrow. The PC-I emphasizes the frequent use of public transport by Islamabad residents and underscores the anticipated benefits of the initiative.
