Indian CM Drinking Water from ‘Holy’ River Backfires

Two days after he drank a drink of water directly from Kali Bein, a holy river in Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was admitted to Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital with a stomachache on Tuesday.

Sources claim that he has undergone testing and is still a patient. According to sources, he was hospitalized on Tuesday night with a severe stomachache at his official residence in Chandigarh. From there, he was taken to the hospital in Delhi. Since the administration kept the specifics of his condition a closely-guarded secret, he was transported to the Capital without his entire security crew.

The chief minister’s office declined to confirm the CM’s hospitalization, despite a spokesman saying the CM was in good health and had a full day of scheduled back-to-back meetings on Thursday. However, according to sources, drinking water directly from the rivulet was what gave him the disease. The cleanup initiative, which had begun on July 16, 2000, was celebrating its 22nd anniversary at the time. The project initially made impressive progress but has now slowed down significantly. However, compared to Kali Bein before 2000, it was significantly cleaner when Mann drank water from it directly.

Without assistance from the government, the cleaning initiative was initiated by environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, a former member of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) who is now an AAP Rajya Sabha MP. They cleared the area of weeds, cleaned the water, and educated the locals. When former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam visited the site in 2006 and commended them for their achievement, it was clear that their six years of arduous work had paid off. The project to stop the release of untreated water into the rivulet was then announced to be undertaken by the Punjab government, which was then led by the Congress party of that time.

The administration discovered 73 villages spread across three districts that were discharging sewage into the Kali Bein. Every community was expected to construct a sizable pond as part of the project to collect the sewer water, which would later be purified in a water treatment facility and used for irrigation.

Panchayats were supposed to supply the land for the ponds. The Kali Bein is of great significance to the Sikh faith and history since it is thought that Nanak Dev, the first Guru, acquired enlightenment here. He would take a dip in the Kali Bein when Guru Nanak Dev was visiting Sultanpur Lodhi with his sister Bebe Nanki. One day, he is alleged to have vanished under the river, only to reappear three days later. The “Mool Mantra” of the Sikh faith was the first thing he recited.
