Imran Khan – First PM to appear in District & Sessions court via video link

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan appeared via video connection before Additional District & Sessions Judge in the defamation case against PML-N leader Khawaja Asif making him the first ever PM to appear in court via video link.

According to reports, Prime Minister Imran Khan appeared in court via e-court service as a witness against Khawaja Asif in the case. In court, he filed an affidavit in which he denied the charges of the PML-N stalwart, calling them “baseless.”

During the proceedings, Prime Minister Khan praised the e-court service programme, stating that the use of technology saves time and money. He further stated that the service will aid in the quick resolution of issues.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, flanked by State Minister Farrukh Habib and SAPM Dr. Shahbaz Gill, told reporters after the hearing that the law ministry has developed a new method through which court appearances in Islamabad can be made via video link.

PM Imran Khan, as chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), served Khawaja Asif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), with a defamation notice in 2012.

Khan was accused by Asif of gambling with the money raised for his Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital by investing in Dubai real estate. Khan is also accused of transferring Rs4.50 billion from the hospital’s account outside of the nation, according to the report.

In his notice, the PTI head said that the claims had harmed fund collection for “Pakistan’s largest charity hospital” and that if the situation remained the same, thousands of patients will be hurt.
