Immigrants Can More Easily Get Permanent Residency in Germany now

Following the government’s approval of a new immigration bill on Wednesday, tens of thousands of migrants who have been living in Germany without a permanent visa will be eligible for residency.

By January 1, 2022, around 136,000 people who have resided in Germany for at least five years would be covered by the new regulation, which was approved by the Cabinet.

If eligible, applicants can initially request a one-year resident status before requesting permanent residency in Germany. They must speak German, have sufficient income to support themselves independently in the state, and demonstrate that they have “fully assimilated” into society.

After three years of residence in Germany, individuals under the age of 27 may already submit an application for a road to permanent residency. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told reporters that they want those who are properly integrated to have good prospects in the country. By doing this, they also reduce bureaucracy and uncertainty for those who have already assimilated into the community.

The new immigration law will also make it simpler for refuge seekers to learn German because they will all receive the opportunity to enroll in classes, as opposed to only those who had a good chance of being granted refuge in the country before. The new legislation will allow qualified workers, such as information technology specialists and those who hold occupations that are urgently needed in Germany, to move there with their families immediately, which wasn’t previously permitted. No prior language proficiency is required of family members relocating to the region.

Faeser stated that they must find qualified workers more rapidly. In several fields, the state urgently requires them. The government wants competent workers to arrive in Germany fast and establish themselves there. Additionally, the measure will facilitate the deportation of criminals by increasing the maximum period of incarceration prior to deportation for some offenders from three months to six months. According to the German news agency DPA, the delay is meant to give officials more time to get ready for deportation, including confirming identity, locating missing documents, and setting up a seat on an airline.

Criminals’ rights to reside will be easier to take away in the future, according to Faeser. We will make it simpler to authorize imprisonment until deportation for criminals, preventing those who may leave the state from fleeing before their deportation.

Before becoming law, the modifications still need to be approved by the Bundestag and Bundesrat, the lower and upper houses of parliament. Critics claimed the proposals were insufficient and charged that the coalition government of Germany had backtracked on a pledge to alter the nation’s immigration policies entirely.
