Hot Air Balloon Fire in Mexico kills Two

In Mexico City, a married couple perished when their hot air balloon caught fire. Their daughter, who had been hurt when she jumped out of the balloon, was hospitalized.

According to Daily Mail UK, the family had just taken one final family photo in front of the balloon when the disaster happened. Jose Nolasco, 50, and Virginia Becerril, 38, were identified as the deceased by the source. They were both residents of Caujimalpa de Morelos, a city located just 12 miles outside of Mexico City. According to Daily Mail UK, police stated the couple’s daughter, Regina Itzani, broke her arm and suffered second-degree burns after jumping out of the balloon when it caught fire. Regina’s actual age is unknown due to contradicting stories.

Reyna Gloria Sarmiento, Itzani’s grandmother, told the local press that she was “awake” and stable, according to the source, who also stated that she is likely to survive. The publication claims that Sarmiento also told reporters, “It was my daughter Virginia’s birthday, Regina’s mom, and they had organized this ride as a surprise for her,” and that Itzani hugged her parents before jumping out of the balloon. A person can be seen stepping down from an aircraft and the balloon’s basket being completely consumed by flames in a video that has been circulated on social media. Police reportedly refused to confirm whether the person was Itzani or the pilot, according to Daily Mail UK. Whether or not a pilot was present, though, is still unknown.

The tragedy happened over the ancient Teotihuacan ruins, according to Daily Mail UK. The source claimed that cops were present when the balloon finally came to rest and was tarping the deceased.

Although preliminary investigations suggest that the gasoline storage system may have caused the incident, authorities noted that the cause is still under investigation, according to the source. According to Daily Mail UK, Caujimalpa de Morelos town hall representatives stated in a statement “We offer our sympathies to the relatives, friends, and acquaintances of Jose Nolasco and Viridiana Becerril who perished in the Teotihuacan hot air balloon disaster. Regina has our support, and our prayers, and we wish her a quick recovery.”
