Horse Escapes Mid-Flight: Plane Forced to Return to JFK Airport

A horse that had broken free from its crate on board a freight jet bound for Belgium was forced to make an emergency landing back in New York City. Within thirty minutes of the aircraft’s first takeoff, the audio tapes from air traffic control, recreated on YouTube, indicated that the horse had come loose from the Boeing 747 cargo plane, as reported by ABC News.

The pilot of the aircraft informed air traffic control that there was a live animal, a horse, on board. “We have to go back to New York,” the pilot remarked. “We are unable to secure the horse back,” but flying the aircraft was not an issue.

When the plane returned to John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, the captain requested to see a veterinarian for the horse but did not provide details about any potential ailments the animal might have had. Due to the plane’s weight, 20 tons of gasoline had to be dumped into the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 10 miles west of Martha’s Vineyard.

The pilot sought assistance with the horse on the plane’s ramp as soon as it touched down, declaring, “We have a horse in trouble.” The pilot of the aircraft, Air Atlanta Icelandic, did not respond to a message from the Guardian seeking comment. An animal had previously escaped from a cargo stall while traveling on an aircraft before this most recent instance.

According to the Associated Press, a bear broke free from its cage aboard an Iraqi Airways flight traveling from Dubai to Baghdad in August. The bear was seen wandering around the cargo area of the aircraft in viral video footage. To soothe the bear, airline employees can be seen caressing it in the footage.

Although the bear was eventually put under sedation and taken out of the plane, passengers claimed on social media that the bear’s problems significantly delayed their flights. Later, an unidentified Iraqi Airlines representative told the AP that the bear was ultimately flown to Baghdad.
