Former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf passes away

On Sunday, former President Pervez Musharraf passed away after a prolonged battle with the rare disease amyloidosis.

He was 79 years old at the time of his death. The former army chief passed away at a hospital in Dubai, according to a statement issued by his family, which was quoted by Geo News.

Immediately after the news of Musharraf’s demise, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement expressing their condolences. The statement was issued by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad and all the services chiefs. They expressed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and offered their prayers for the departed soul. The military’s media wing added, “May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family.”

Retired General Pervez Musharraf was a Pakistani military officer and politician who served as the 9th President of Pakistan from 2001 until 2008. He was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi, India.

He joined the Pakistan Army in 1961 and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Chief of Army Staff in 1998. He led the country as its President during a critical period in its history, including the US-led War on Terror following the 9/11 attacks and a period of domestic political instability.

Despite his significant contributions, Musharraf’s presidency was marked by controversy and criticism, particularly related to his suspension of the constitution and imposition of emergency rule in 2007. He passed away on February 5, 2022, at the age of 79 after a prolonged battle with the rare disease amyloidosis.
