For Every Economy Passenger, Etihad Airways is Adopting a Mangrove Tree

Every passenger who reserves an Economy Space seat with Etihad Airways will get a mangrove tree, making every “space” seat finally carbon neutral. The construction follows the introduction of the Etihad Forest, a network of mangroves and other forests being constructed in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere in the world as part of Etihad’s commitment to biodiversity, wildlife, and environmental protection.

The Etihad Mangrove Forest, which was established in February 2022, aims to plant 182,000 mangrove trees in Abu Dhabi by the first quarter of 2023 before the program’s second phase of planting new forests in other countries.

As an important habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife, mangroves remove up to four times more carbon dioxide from the air than other tropical forests, assisting in the fight against climate change effects like coral bleaching and coastline degradation. Mangroves also support biodiversity and wildlife. For every economy space seat purchased on any flight operated by Etihad Airways, Etihad will, as part of the project, plant one mangrove tree in designated areas of Abu Dhabi. The amount of CO2 created by an eight-hour trip will be equaled by the lifespan absorption of each mangrove plant, which may absorb up to 250 kg.

In addition to their sustainability aspirations, they are committed to enabling their guests and partner to travel more sustainably and empowering them to make responsible decisions, said Mariam Al Qubaisi, Head of Sustainability at Etihad Aviation Group. They are streamlining the procedure so that anyone may travel sustainably using the most recent iteration of their sustainability program, which involves planting a mangrove on behalf of every guest who orders an Economy Space seat.

The Etihad Mangrove Forest is a crucial project in its sustainability journey to make sure that they are fulfilling our obligation to reduce atmospheric carbon. On every continent they travel to, they want to plant trees, and they want to give their passengers a fun opportunity to help. Within ten days of the flight, every passenger who orders an Economy Space Seat will get confirmation of their given mangrove in the Etihad Forest. Visitors can follow, virtually visit, and view images and other information about their tree through the email link, confirming the carbon offset for their most recent trip. The option to register a claimed tree allows visitors to easily locate their tree at a later time.

Through the platform’s app, Etihad visitors can “talk” with their chatbot-enabled trees and follow each one with satellite maps. They can also access data, including measures for tracking CO2 usage. There is more room to relax and plenty of legroom in the economy space. Guests can reserve a seat in Economy Space at any time up until check-in. It is only offered on flights operated by Etihad.
