First-Ever Discovery of a Supermassive Black Hole

At a distance of millions of light-years from Earth, astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole that is thought to be the “largest ever seen” and has a mass 30 billion times greater than that of the Sun.

According to a study that was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, it is an ultra-massive black hole and is so enormous that astronomers are still trying to understand it. In an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle, James Nightingale, the study’s author from Durham University in the United Kingdom, said that he is also attempting to comprehend the size of this black hole and that there aren’t any others that may possibly be larger.

A brand-new method called gravitational lensing enabled the detection of the ultra-massive black hole. It is due to the gravitational attraction of galaxies and black holes that light is disturbed. Similar to this, a nearby galaxy was utilized as a magnifying glass to bend the light of the objects located in far-off areas, making their light appear larger. From Earth, astronomers were able to see the larger glow. The majority of the largest black holes that we are aware of are in an active state, where matter drawn in close to the black hole warms up and emits energy in the form of light, X-rays, and other radiation, continued Nightingale.

In addition, he said “Inactive black holes can now only be studied in faraway galaxies, but gravitational lensing now makes this possible. Through the application of this technique, we might be able to locate a lot more black holes outside of our immediate region and discover how these peculiar occurrences evolved much earlier in cosmic history. This finding has increased the desire of astronomers to discover more black holes and to understand how they grow in size. Astronomers have not conclusively determined the origins of ultra-massive black holes, and their detection is rare.
