Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin Under Fire after Leaked Party Video

After a video of the Finnish prime minister partying with other politicians and celebrities surfaced online, Sanna Marin is now dealing with the political fallout.

The video, which was posted on social media on Wednesday, shows five other individuals dancing and singing alongside Marin at what appears to be a party in a private home. On her knees and with her arms behind her head, 36-year-old Marin can be seen dancing and singing at one point.

One of the other partygoers can be heard shouting “jauhojengi,” which is slang for cocaine and translates to “flour gang” in Finnish, according to reports in the country’s media. It wasn’t immediately clear when the party, which was apparently attended by Finnish singer Alma and parliamentarian Ilmari Nurminen of the prime minister’s Social Democratic Party, was held. However, the video has spurred demands for Marin to submit to a voluntary drug test from her political rivals. The leader of the opposition party, Riikka Purra, said there was a “shade of uncertainty” over the prime minister as a result of the video.

On Thursday, Marin refuted claims that she used drugs at the house party she called ‘wild’ and denied any use of the term ‘jauhojengi.’ She stated that she has only drank alcohol; she has never used drugs or anything else. The Finnish president told reporters, that she has danced, sung, partied, and done completely lawful things. She is disappointed that the video of the event was made public. In the wake of the incident, Marin, who in December 2019 became Finland’s youngest prime minister ever, also stated that she would not change and that she intended to carry on as before.

She remarked that she leads a busy life that includes her family, her job, and her free time with friends. Almost the same as most folks her age. She is going to continue to be precisely the same person she has been up until now, and she hopes that’s okay. The events of this week came after Marin was compelled to apologize in public for going out clubbing after having intimate contact with a COVID-19-positive person at the end of last year.

The Finnish prime minister said at the time that because she had left her work phone at home, she had missed a message asking her to isolate herself. Her test results for the virus were negative. The German news source Bild this week branded Marin, who is upfront about her love of partying and frequently appears in photos at music festivals, the ‘coolest politician in the world.’
