Fees for US passports to pop

Few things appear to be immune to the affliction of inflation these days, and US passports will be no exception.

The cost of a US passport book will increase by $20 for all customers on December 27, according to the US State Department.

“The higher charge is necessary to ensure we continue to create one of the most secure travel and identity documents in the world,” the State Department stated in a tweet.

The sort of passport you desire, whether you’re renewing or acquiring your first one, and how quickly you need it are all elements that go into the cost calculation.

Consider the following scenario: The current fee for an adult renewing a US passport book by mail is $110. When you factor in the extra $20 starting next week, you’re looking at a total of $130, or a rise of 18.2 percent.

In the 12 months ending in November, consumer price inflation increased by 6.8% without seasonal adjustments.

This State Department fee calculator can instantly tell you how much one will cost you.

Even in late 2021, the standard method of obtaining a passport is still through the mail.

President Joe Biden, on the other hand, signed an executive order this week directing federal departments to develop systems that deliver more efficient customer service.

Current US passport holders would be able to renew their books totally online in the future. The directive gave US agencies 180 days to report to the President on the status of their efforts.
