Electoral Setback: PTI’s Sanam Javaid Exits Race as Tribunal Rejects Appeals

The Appellate Tribunal of the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected the appeals filed by Sanam Javaid, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist.

The tribunal affirmed the decision of the returning officer (RO) to reject Sanam’s nomination papers for two National Assembly seats (NA-120 and NA-119) and one provincial assembly seat (PP-150). Justice Tariq Nadeem delivered the verdict on her appeals. Sanam, who is currently incarcerated, submitted her nomination papers on December 19, intending to contest elections for Lahore’s provincial assembly seat, PP-150, against Maryam Nawaz.

She is one of several PTI members held in custody in connection with the May 9 riots that erupted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan in a corruption case. She faced charges in multiple instances, including an assault on the Corps Commander House in Lahore and setting ablaze police vehicles in the Cantonment area during the violent protests earlier this year. Conversely, the tribunal deferred a ruling on Nadeem Sherwani’s appeal challenging the approval of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz’s nomination papers by the returning officer from NA-119.

The decision was postponed after the petitioner submitted additional documents to bolster his case. In the meantime, the LHC Appellate Tribunal overturned the returning officer’s decision to reject the nomination papers of PTI leader Hammad Azhar and his father Mian Azhar from PP-171 due to their seconders and proposers not appearing. Subsequently, their seconders and proposers presented themselves before the tribunal, leading Justice Ahmed Nadeem Arshad to announce a verdict in their favor. However, Justice Tariq Nadeem dismissed Azhar’s appeal against the rejection of his papers from the NA-129 constituency.
