Early Light-Off For the Eiffel Tower As Paris Conserves Energy

To save energy this winter, Paris will turn off the lights at the Eiffel Tower an hour earlier than usual, lower the water temperature in public pools, and postpone heating public buildings, the city’s mayor announced on Tuesday.

In reaction to Russia cutting off gas supplies and rising energy prices, President Emmanuel Macron set a target that industry, households, and municipal authorities reduce their energy use by 10%. This objective will be met through the following. In Europe, nations are looking for measures to reduce their energy usage and restock their gas supplies in anticipation of a potential total cutoff.

Unlike some of its neighbors, France is less exposed to Russian gas, but a record number of nuclear reactor failures have caused France to buy power when it would normally export it, adding to the strain on the power markets. Mayor Anne Hidalgo remarked that “France will always be the City of Light.” Currently, the Eiffel Tower is lit up until 1 a.m. by a lighting setup that gives it a golden hue. When illuminated, it twinkles at the top of each hour owing to 20,000 flashing lamps. At 11:45 p.m., the monument’s lights would be turned out, cutting its energy use by 4%.

According to Hidalgo, starting on September 23 public building illumination in Paris will be turned off at 10 p.m. and pool water temperature will be lowered to 25 Celsius from 26 Celsius. The temperature of the heating in public buildings will be reduced to 18 Celsius. Even while officials are protected from the worst of the cost rises by long-term electricity and gas contracts, the capital’s energy bill would nevertheless total 90 million euros this year, 35 million more than typical. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine between the EU and Russia is a major cause of Europe’s serious energy problem. It has produced many scenarios of an intensifying energy crisis that affects not just the continent as a whole but also each EU member state to varying degrees.

Some have changed their posture and strategy to satisfy their domestic requirements as a result of the fact that this is affecting nations differently. France, a nation that has historically been prone to social mass mobilization, is feeling the local pressure and as a result, is becoming less amenable to the EU leadership’s overall position. While the EU’s decision to significantly censure Russia in response to the war in Ukraine was universally applauded, it was not entirely expected how Moscow would react. The EU is currently bearing the brunt of this decision by severely restricting energy supplies to the European continent, supplied through the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines to Germany and subsequently to other EU states.
