Dream-Come-True: Students to Be Promoted without Examination in Sindh Schools

According to the choices reached by the steering committee’s subcommittee, the Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has declared that students in grades I through III will be promoted to the following classes without sitting for their exams.

According to a notice released by the education department on February 2, the subcommittee of the body convened on December 12 of last year, at which time it was resolved that the new academic session would begin on August 1. A decision was made at the meeting to start the fourth- through eighth-grade exams following Eid ul Fitr, which will end on May 6.

According to the announcement, the HSC (XI and XII) exams will start on May 22 while the yearly exams for grades IX and X will start on May 8. The dates of the exams were set in consideration of the holy month of Ramadan.

The education administration also decided that the results of SSC Part II would be released on or before July 15 and those of SSC Part-I (IX) would be released in September. After 60 days, the results of HSC Part-I (XI) will be made public, and the results of HSC Part-II (XII) will be revealed on or before August 15, 2023.

It is important to note that the committee last year agreed that 40% of the question papers should be MCQs and 60% should be descriptive. The members of the committee said that, for a variety of reasons, it appears that the addition of more MCQs has not had an impact on students’ evaluations. The modification in the paper layout has made it easier for the students to obtain such marks as a result of the system’s poor practices. This calls for a review and revision of the pattern. In place of knowledge-based questions, a committee member proposed that the questions be written with understanding in mind.

The three sections of the paper under the new format would be multiple choice questions (20 marks), short answer questions (40 marks), and long questions (40 marks). The committee also resolved that the teaching of the SSC-level Asan Sindhi subject will follow the boards’ recommendations for SSC Part 1. Rafia Javed, the Additional Director of the Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions, gave orders to all private schools to abide by the decisions of the steering committee of the Education and Literacy Department dated February 2022 and its subcommittee dated December 12 regarding the administration of exams and the start of the new academic session.

Javed further announced in a circular that students in grades I through III would be immediately promoted to the following grade and that grades IV through VIII will have their exams after Eid Ul Fitr. On August 1, it was noted, the new academic year will begin for the institutions. The additional director issued a severe warning at the same time about the consequences of disregarding steering committee decisions.
