Zainab Abbas, a well-known Pakistani presenter who is currently covering the 2023 World Cup, was deported by India—a decision that has sparked significant backlash on social media.
According to an Indian lawyer, Zainab Abbas was deported based on tweets she allegedly posted eight years ago, which were critical of the Hindu religion and India. The attorney subsequently reported Zainab Abbas for cybercrime and requested the Delhi Police to initiate an FIR against her due to these tweets. The Pakistan-born presenter, who had been covering this important event in India, is said to have relocated to Dubai following the incident, as reported by the media.
There has been a flurry of speculation, with some sources suggesting that the ICC is unwilling to counter what they perceive as Indian propaganda. Uncertainty surrounds Zainab Abbas, a well-known presenter who has covered various international sporting events, regarding the purpose and timing of the discovery of her previous tweets. It has not yet been established whether Zainab may or may not have posted the tweets.
This incident has brought press freedom and the treatment of foreign media professionals, especially during the World Cup, under scrutiny. Moreover, due to the players’ ongoing visa approval process to enter India, the pre-World Cup team-building trip to Dubai for the Pakistani team was unexpectedly delayed last month.
