COMSATS Lecturer Fired For Asking an “Immoral Question” in an English exam

Students at the COMSATS institute were left perplexed, and social media erupted over a “very unpleasant” and “immoral” question in an English composition exam. The institute then terminated the staff member’s employment.

The information reveals that in their English exam from December of last year, the students were required to prepare a 300-word essay in response to the controversial question. The university was instructed to perform an investigation into the situation and inform the government of the action taken in this respect after the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) received complaints from the students.

“The Honorable Federal Minister for Science and Technology has taken serious notice and expresses his profound concerns and resentment regarding the substance of the quiz of the English subject for the Bachelors of Engineering of COMSATS University Islamabad” (CUI). On December 4 and 5, 2022, the quiz was given. In a letter sent to the institute on January 19 from the ministry, it was stated that the quiz’s material was “extremely unacceptable, completely in violation of Islamic Republic of Pakistani curriculum laws, and produced disturbance among the families of the pupils.”

It requested an investigation into the “very objectionable elements” of the quiz and a directive to the Rector of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) to take harsh measures against the accountable parties. Also, the ministry was instructed to produce a report in a week. The university responded by informing the MoST that the teacher who created the test had been fired. I am required to cite the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) letter No. 1(10)12023-DIR-M(S&T) dated January 19, 2023, on the subject at hand and to inform the reader that the matter has already been resolved and that K (name withheld), Lecturer (Visiting Faculty), has had his or her employment terminated as of January 5, 2023.

It went on to say that the teacher was also off the employer’s list for the future. As well as expressing their outrage over the contentious question, internet users urged the government to punish those involved severely.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmed raised the topic in the upper chamber of parliament, where he urged that the government conduct an investigation and inquire of the university as to who appointed the lecturer. Separately, Maulana Ghafoor Haideri, the leader of the JUI-F, denounced it, claiming that certain individuals were tampering with children’s futures in the guise of English education.
