Car drifting event at Shahi Qila raises many questions, CM takes notice

The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has once again broken the rules for the international heritage site by allowing a car drifting event to be held at Shahi Qila (Fort of Lahore), according to media.

The WCLA jeopardised an international heritage site by authorising a dangerous automobile drifting event at Shahi Qila during a packed festival. Videos of the event have surfaced, revealing the event’s lack of safety preparations for those who may create mishaps at any time.

The WCLA director-general (DG) Kamran Lashari told media that the commissioner’s office had requested the authority to organise a programme, but that no information on the vehicle drifting event had been provided.

After learning of a car drifting event, Lashari claimed the authorities took swift action to put a stop to it. He clarified that the administration had denied permission to hold a car drifting event at Shahi Qila’s heritage monument.

The Lahore commissioner’s office, on the other hand, refuted the WCLA DG’s account, claiming that the office had not given any directives for the event.

The commissioner’s office spokesperson told the media that WCLA is authorised to stop any illegal conduct and that the event was not approved by the office.

He ordered the responsible cops to be disciplined and stated that such activities at a heritage site would not be permitted.

Following the broadcast on media, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar took notice and requested a report from the WCLA, as well as initiating an investigation.

The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) had already approved plans for a private ceremony at Shahi Qila, an international heritage site, in March 2020. (Fort of Lahore).

Despite the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) orders and the fact that the Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which prohibits the organisation of public or private events, the concerned body, the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), allowed a marriage ceremony to be held at the Royal Kitchen of the Fort.

The WCLA’s spokesperson claimed that he was unaware of the LHC’s directions in this matter.
