In addition to announcing $10 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza’s immediate needs, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for the opening of a humanitarian corridor.
Following diplomatic failures to provide help to Gaza, Trudeau made these remarks. He stated that Israel had enforced a total blockade on Gaza and launched extensive airstrikes, in reaction to a Hamas attack the previous week, resulting in the loss of more than 1,300 lives. The Prime Minister of Canada urged the urgent creation of a humanitarian pathway in Gaza, based on Canada’s call for unhindered humanitarian access.
This pathway would facilitate the delivery of vital supplies such as food, fuel, and water to Gaza’s civilian population. “We hold significant apprehensions regarding the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza and firmly advocate for unhindered access to humanitarian aid in the region,” he stated. In contrast, Justin Trudeau conveyed to the House of Commons, the lower legislative body, that while he recognizes Israel’s legitimate right to self-defense by international law, he underscored the importance of upholding rules even during times of conflict.
