California, Punjab Sign – Sister State Agreement

At the California State Capitol in Sacramento, an agreement to designate Punjab and California as sister states was signed to foster a cooperative partnership.

Wasif Khurshid, the chairman of the Planning and Development Board, signed on behalf of the Punjab government, while Anthony Rendon, the speaker of the legislature, signed on behalf of the state.

Masood Khan, Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, was present at the event. Former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, California’s lieutenant governor Eleni Kounalakis, Rendon, and a sizable portion of the Pakistani-American community were present for the signing event. According to a news release from the Pakistani embassy, Ambassador Khan and the delegation from Pakistan were welcomed at the assembly and were acknowledged and welcomed on the house’s floor.

The ambassador added that the agreement would present a chance to tap into untapped economic potential and foster people-to-people relationships. The agreement would also boost reciprocal trade and commerce and increase the possibilities for educational, environmental, and cultural relations. According to Khan, the thriving middle class of Punjab and California, one of the top four economies in the world, would produce the necessary synergies to foster a connection that would be mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation. The delegation had previously visited the University of California, Davis, a premier institution for agricultural and veterinary research, where they had a meeting with Chancellor Gary May. According to a news release, the two parties talked about methods to improve their alliance and decided to expand their cooperation between UC Davis and the University of Agriculture (UAF) in Faisalabad.

They also talked about how to encourage cooperation in the export of dates and mangoes from Pakistan. It was also discussed if UC Davis supported hybrid wheat, cotton, and rice seeds. The summit also covered cooperation in climate-smart agriculture, according to the report. The delegation also went to a reception held at Dr. Asif Mahmood’s home by the well-known Pakistani-American politician. Representatives from the assembly, Congresswoman Judy May Chu, Holden, former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, and a sizable number of Pak-American community leaders, educators, and social entrepreneurs were among those present. Chu welcomed the delegation from Pakistan and drew comparisons between California and Punjab, emphasizing the two states’ strong agricultural foundations and dynamic populations.

As we have so many things in common to build upon, “California and Punjab will begin a fantastic cooperation,” she declared. Mahmood was welcomed, and Ambassador Khan complimented him for trying to present a sympathetic image of Pakistan in California. Ambassador Khan emphasized the positive aspects of the two-way connection by stating that it has historically been marked by “longevity and resilience.” “We have brought this legacy of collaboration from the pre-and post-Cold War eras to the era of the modern technological age, which is continually changing regional and global landscapes,” he continued. The envoy declared, “The spirit of solidarity between our two countries endures.

Khan emphasized the crucial part played by the Pakistani diaspora in establishing friendships between the two nations and acting as a link between Punjab and California. The motivation for our partnership is the more than 200,000 Pakistani Americans who live in California and other West Coast states. The ambassador emphasized the recent uptick in bilateral trade volume and stated that there was a significant potential to increase bilateral trade volume, particularly in the technology and cyber sectors. Khan expressed the belief that a strong connection between Punjab and California will be essential in unlocking the potential already present for the benefit of both peoples.
