Bryde’s Whale Found Lifeless on Balochistan Beach

Concerns regarding the protection of the Bryde’s whale, scientifically known as “Balaenoptera brydei,” were raised after one of these whales became stranded in a remote area between the Pasni and Shomal coastal belts, notably in Raini Hor, Balochistan.

Several instances of this particular type of whale being observed in the seas around Pakistan have been documented. In 2022, detailed records indicate that four of these whales got caught near the shores of Pakistan. In one instance, a 27-foot-long whale got tangled in a fishing net. Recent papers have also highlighted cases of Bryde’s whale entrapment in Iran. Muhammad Moazzam Khan, Technical Advisor at WWF, emphasized the dire threat facing this species in the Arabian Sea, expressing alarm over its unstable condition.

Despite the recent increase in the number of Bryde’s whales in the Arabian Sea, recurrent stranding incidents have drawn global attention. During a recent meeting, the International Whaling Commission expressed concern about the ongoing challenges faced by this species in the Arabian Sea. Moazzam Khan recommends conducting comprehensive research on the behavioral patterns of Bryde’s whales within the Arabian Sea.

Understanding the elements that make them vulnerable is crucial for implementing appropriate conservation measures, underscoring the importance of the suggested study. Comprehensive research is recommended to address ongoing challenges faced by Bryde’s whales in the region and enable informed conservation efforts.
