Azad Kashmir Welcomes Foreign Investors to Tourism Sector

According to Raja Farooq Haider Khan, the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the Pakistan-administrated area of disputed Kashmir, the administration is thinking about allowing foreign companies in the travel and tourist industry access to its gorgeous scenery.

For investors in London and Dubai, Khan added, they will arrange roadshows and talks to persuade them to invest in the tourist sector, which has not yet been completely utilized.

They are updating telephone, Internet, and transportation infrastructure for the convenience of travelers, he stated. Khan expressed the expectation that the sector would become self-sufficient as an industry over the next three years and said that his government had begun building the groundwork, including the required legislation for luring foreign investors.

The administration is thinking about allowing winter tourism instead of just summer visitors, he added. Khan continued that the private sector (investors) would be enticed to invest in developing hotels, guest houses, and recreational facilities. Giving the details of the government’s intention to attract international investors, the chairman of the Kashmir Board of Investment, Sardar Naveed Sadiq told Arab News that following requisite legal formalities the investors would be asked to invest in Kashmir.

Given that the temperature in the Arab world is still high, we are concentrating on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Bahrain. We plan on giving them property for the development of tourist villages so they may visit in the summer not only with their families but also to use the services for business, according to Sadiq. During the terrible earthquake of 2005, which claimed the lives of almost 90,000 people and devastated the region’s key infrastructure, Arab nations and investors were crucial.

Modern medical facilities were built in the earthquake-affected areas with assistance from the Arab nations. Sadiq said that they helped us with modern hospitals and school buildings, which had been destroyed in the earthquake. He added that they are looking at the various places for the building of five-star hotels and chairlifts so that visiting tourists have access to every type of recreational activity. The objective is to boost adventure tourism in the region.

Kashmir officials have stated that the region is ready to invest in industries other than tourism, such as minerals and energy. The government is offering investment opportunities in the hydro sector due to the rising need for energy. While others are in the planning stages, many hydroelectric power projects are nearing completion. There are numerous projects with 50MW or more where there is investment potential, according to Sadiq. Currently, Kashmir cannot be visited by international visitors without Islamabad’s consent. Officials from Kashmir, however, have stated that talks to permit unrestricted foreign travel to the region are in progress.
