Australia: Shooter Detained After Firing Shots in Canberra Airport

After the airport’s evacuation due to shooting within the terminal, passengers are now permitted to return. After shooting several bullets in the Canberra Airport check-in area, a man has been taken into custody.

On Sunday afternoon, the airport was shut down and flights were grounded for almost three hours while police found the gun and searched the terminal. During the incident, nobody was hurt. The man arrived at the airport on Sunday at around 1:30 pm, according to ACT Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Dave Craft, and he sat close to the glass windows of the departures check-in area.

He claimed that the man had taken the gun out of his hands and fired about five bullets after waiting about five minutes. From what he could see at the crime scene, the male fired the rounds at the terminal’s glass. No shots were fired at people, clients, or employees. Glass in the departure hall’s windows has three gunshot holes visible. Police think the individual acted alone, according to Detective Acting Superintendent Craft, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. He stated that they have no idea of any motivation.

They currently believe the male landed at the airport without going through any pre-flight screening procedures. He claimed that the individual was thought to be the sole perpetrator of the incident. Witness remembers having a ‘terrifying’ experience while hiding. When people began yelling ‘run,’ ABC reporter Lily Thomson suspected something was awry after hearing the bullets. She remarked that she saw this grandmother with a baby and the terror on her face and she realized it was something terrible. Everyone fled, but she hid behind an information desk while staying with that grandmother and her child.

They remained there for a little while before security ordered them to leave and go to the parking lot. People were scurrying and cowering under chairs. It was frightening. They had no idea what was happening. The expressions on people’s faces were extremely dreadful. Police searched the entire terminal and questioned witnesses as they ordered the evacuation of the airport and the grounding of roughly five planes. Police and airport workers collaborated closely to securely reopen the airport, according to Detective Acting Superintendent Craft.

He stated that the police have investigated the crime scene. He simply needs to reassure everyone that the airport is secure, that ACT Policing has intervened, and that there is no ongoing threat to the local population or to travelers who are arriving and exiting. Canberra Airport encouraged tourists to check with their airline before heading to the airport since several flights had been canceled or rescheduled as a result of the event. Katy Gallagher, the ACT senator, and finance minister, posted about the ‘terrifying’ incident on Twitter. She remarked that it must have been terrible for everyone. The local airport is such a vital part of the Canberra community. The first responders are much appreciated for keeping everyone safe.
