Asian Winter Games to be Held at NEOM Saudi Arabia in 2029

According to the project’s website, the TROJENA development, which is scheduled to be finished in 2026, will provide outdoor skiing, a man-made freshwater lake, and a natural reserve. Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s sports minister, posted on Twitter, with the unwavering support of the Saudi government & HRH Crown Prince to the sports sector, they are delighted to announce they have won the bid to host AWG TROJENA2029 as the first country in west Asia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 development plan seeks to lessen its dependency on oil and alter the economy, among other things, by fostering sports. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s most ambitious project is NEOM.

“The Line”, a zero-carbon city, as well as industrial and logistical sectors will be located in NEOM, a high-tech development on the Red Sea that covers 26,500 square kilometers (10,230 square miles). In a statement following its general assembly meeting in Phnom Penh, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the deserts and mountains of Saudi Arabia will soon be a playground for winter sports. The statement noted that the megacity known as NEOM will be the first West Asian city to host the event and noted that the Saudi bid was “unanimously approved”.

Since its debut in 2017, NEOM has faced backlash for its outlandish ideas, such as flying taxis and robot maids, even as economists and architects have questioned its viability. The Asian Winter Games will be held in Trojena, a part of NEOM where winter lows plunge below zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit), and where the average annual temperature is frequently 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the region.

The Winter Olympics of 1972 served as the inspiration for the Asian Winter Games. The Japanese city of Sapporo, which served as the Olympic host city, was equipped to host multisport winter games. Therefore, the Olympic Council of Asia readily concurred when the Japan Olympic Committee suggested holding the Asian Games in the winter. In Sapporo in 1986, just seven countries participated in the inaugural Asian Winter Games. The six events of the inaugural Asian Winter Games were speed skating, short-track speed skating, ice hockey, biathlon, and alpine skiing. In each edition since 1986, more events have been introduced. Ski jumping, freestyle skating, and figure skating contests are becoming commonplace.

Curling and snowboarding competitions were only offered during some games, whereas bandy (2011) and ski orienteering (2011) were both contested just once. The Asian Winter Games have drawn more countries in the past 21 years. With a record number of athletes, the 2007 Asian Winter Games in Changchun attracted 27 of the 45 nations. For the first time in Winter Asiad history, delegations from all 45 member countries were sent.

In 2017, Sapporo hosted the eighth Asian Winter Games, while Gangwon, South Korea, was set to host the ninth in 2025. Australia and New Zealand, two nations in Oceania, were invited to the 2017 Games.
