Ash from a Russian Volcano Blankets the Kamchatka Peninsula

The Shiveluch volcano in Russia erupted, blasting ash across a wide area of the Kamchatka peninsula in the far-east. This might have put flights at risk and rendered some communities inoperable.

Dramatic videos that were made public by the authorities showed a massive wall of ash towering above a white woodland. Volcanologists have issued a red code warning for air travel, and Rosaviatsiya, the Russian aviation regulator, has asked crews to “constantly monitor changes in meteorological information.”

The ash cloud was reported to have travelled hundreds of kilometers (miles) to the north and southwest of Shiveluch by the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), which keeps track of eruptions in the area.

The volcano is continuing to extrude material. Ash clouds up to 15 km (49 200 ft.) high are possible at any time. International and low-flying planes could be impacted by ongoing activity, according to the KVERT’s red code alert notification. Rosaviatsiya reported that it had sent out a notification to air crews requesting that they take precautions to make sure that their flights were secure. Regional air traffic control teams were also “prepared to help crews of Russian and foreign airlines in selecting alternative safe routes,” it was noted.

Vladimir Solodov, the governor of Kamchatka, claimed that Kliuchy, Kozyrevsk, and Mayskoye had suffered the most. In addition to announcing that schools had been shuttered, he asked residents to stay inside.

On the eastern side of the peninsula, the distant rural towns are located along the Kamchatka River. Stay at home as much as you can, advised Solodov on Telegram.
