Argentinian Farmer Displays Lionel Messi’s Face on His Corn Crop on Country’s World Cup Victory

After helping the nation’s soccer team win the World Cup, Lionel Messi has been honored across Argentina with tributes that range from tattoos to murals.

His image is now visible from above, too, on a cornfield that was purposefully created for this.

A field near Los Condores, in the center of the province of Cordoba, was sown using an algorithm that determined where to plant the seeds so that as the corn grew, it would produce a massive visual representation of Messi’s beard. The farmer who planted the odd crop shape in honor of the squad’s victory—their first World Cup since Diego Maradona captained the team in 1986—Maximiliano Spinazze declared of Messi, “For me, Messi is unbeatable.”

“Now that they’ve won the global championship, I’m glad that their achievement may be shown by sowing the crop.” The South American country, which is devoted to soccer, is the third-largest exporter of corn in the world. Football might be its biggest claim to fame, but farming is the country’s principal export generator. A farming engineer named Carlos Faricelli created the programming for the seed-sowing machinery that allowed them to plant the seeds in a precise pattern to produce the final image, with certain places being denser with seeds than others. He claimed that he afterward made the code available to any farmers “who dared to plant it.” He remarked, “I had the idea to design a code that goes in the seeders with Messi’s image as a tribute.

The equipment uses geocoding technologies to determine how much seed per square meter to deposit and where to provide the contrast for various areas of Messi’s face, according to Faricelli. Therefore, when this corn grows and an aerial photograph is taken, where the plants are closer together and the ground is less visible, a more intense green contrasts with where there are fewer plants, and then this type of agricultural art is generated.
