APS attack survivor Ahmad Nawaz becomes president of Oxford Union

Ahmad Nawaz, a survivor of the Army Public School massacre in 2014, is elected president of the Oxford Union, the university’s debate society.

“Today is the most significant and historic day of my life!” on Sunday, Nawaz tweeted, “I am so incredibly delighted to announce that I have been chosen president of the Oxford Union, one of the world’s largest and most historically significant forums!”

Nawaz expressed his “everlasting gratitude” to everyone who helped him win the election. He was also “very grateful” to his parents for their unwavering support.

“[I am grateful to] my friends who have been with me throughout this journey. And finally, my team, who have worked so exceptionally hard to make this truly historical moment happen!” said Nawaz as he thanked everyone.

On December 16, 2014, terrorists invaded the Army Public School in Peshawar Cantonment and unleashed indiscriminate fire, killing 147 people, including 132 pupils, in Pakistan’s bloodiest terrorist attack.

Nawaz, one of the attack survivors, had lost his brother Haris and several others on that terrible day.

The 20-year-old, on the other hand, never let the experience stop him from pursuing his degree.

In 2020, he was enrolled at the University of Oxford, where Malala Yousufzai, Prime Minister Imran Khan, and the late Benazir Bhutto studied.

In addition to his studies at Oxford, Nawaz is a human rights activist.
