Angelina Jolie Transforms into Maria Callas in First Look of Upcoming Biopic

Angelina Jolie, the famous Hollywood actress, portrayed the character of Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s film centered around the celebrated opera singer.

Oscar-nominated Chilean director Pablo Larraín is currently working on ‘Maria,’ a biographical drama that will explore the life of the controversial singer Maria Callas. Following his previous biographical dramas ‘Jackie’ and ‘Spencer,’ which revolved around Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana, respectively, Larraín has commenced work on his next project.

The official synopsis reads, ‘Based on true events, ‘Maria’ tells the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.’ As Angelina Jolie completely transformed herself into the late singer for the project, she appears virtually unrecognizable in the initial project photos. Her on-screen attire is based on actual antique clothing worn by Callas.

The ‘Maria’ cast also includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino, in addition to Jolie in the lead role. Regarding the writing credits, Larraín co-wrote the script for his upcoming film in collaboration with Steven Knight, the writer of ‘Peaky Blinders,’ who also penned the screenplay for his previous film, ‘Spencer.’

‘Maria’ is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film, and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle Company. FilmNation Entertainment is responsible for handling the film’s international sales. The eight-week shoot will take place in Paris, Budapest, Milan, Greece, and other locations. The project is scheduled to begin production.
