Air Quality Alert: Punjab Enforces Mandatory Mask-Wearing Amidst Rising Smog Threat

In ten districts where extreme smog persists, the Punjab government made it mandatory for people to wear face masks when they go outside.

Mohsin Naqvi, the acting chief minister, posted the notice released by the province’s health department the day before on Twitter. The order will be enforced in Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, Sialkot, and Mandi Bahauddin between November 20 and November 26, according to the notification. The Punjab government declares that all residents in the province’s smog-affected districts must wear face masks for one week. Naqvi added, ‘It is our joint duty to prioritize health.

For the sake of a safer neighborhood, kindly follow the instructions.’ The announcement states that the province has taken steps to prevent and control airborne illnesses, emphasizing that the high levels of smog pose a ‘serious and imminent threat to public health in all groups.’ Lahore, the provincial capital, is among the most polluted cities in the world due to alarmingly high rates of air pollution. At least 500 people were hospitalized in 24 hours in emergency rooms of several local hospitals earlier this month due to the city’s hazardous fog. Meanwhile, strict measures were ordered by the Lahore High Court to address the issues posed by the fog.

The court dismissed the Director General of Punjab Environment for failing to ensure environmental protection. The province had already implemented a smart lockout, among other air pollution control measures. With an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 203 on Sunday, Lahore was deemed unhealthy. The main source of pollution was PM2.5, a tiny particulate matter that can enter the bloodstream and lungs, causing serious health issues. The enduring presence of smog in Lahore and its surrounding regions is apparent even after these precautions have been implemented, indicating a restricted influence on air quality.

The impact of smog goes beyond diminished visibility and a rise in traffic accidents. It presents significant health hazards to residents, especially those with respiratory or cardiovascular issues, children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Symptoms of smog exposure include coughing, wheezing, chest pain, eye irritation, headaches, nausea, and fatigue.

Authorities strongly advise individuals to take preventive steps to protect themselves from the detrimental effects of smog. These measures include wearing masks, employing air purifiers, limiting outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours, and seeking medical help if any discomfort is experienced.
