Afghan Women TV presenters cover faces after one day of defiance

All Afghan women appearing in public, including those on television, must wear face coverings, according to the Taliban.

All female Afghan television presenters and reporters complied with a Taliban order to cover their faces, barely one day after defying the command.

Broadcasters thought that their united front on Saturday would persuade Taliban authorities to overturn the decision, but hard-liners argued that it was final and not subject to debate.

The policy is “final and non-negotiable,” according to the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Sonia Niazi, a TOLOnews TV anchor, expressed her displeasure with the order.

It’s basically an outside culture imposing a mask on us, which can cause problems for us while presenting our initiatives,” she explained.

TOLOnews chief editor Khpolwak Safi stated on Facebook, “We are in profound grief today.”

In solidarity with their female colleagues, Safi published an image of male journalists at the news station wearing black face masks.

“I’m unable to breathe or speak properly. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to manage the programme” Khatira Ahmadi, a female TOLOnews broadcaster stated.

Basira Joya, a female host at Ariana News, addressed the issue during a live broadcast, saying that Islam has never placed anything on anyone through force.

Even while wearing a burqa, we continue to fight and work. Nothing will be able to stop us, she murmured, clenching her throat.

“Never imagined this day!” TOLOnews director Lotfullah Najafizada captioned a photo of a presenter with her face hidden on Twitter.

Since regaining power, the Taliban has put significant limitations on media outlets as well as a crackdown on human rights.

Journalists have been assaulted and detained as a result of their reporting. Many rights, including education, labor, and movement, have been taken away from girls and women.

On the instruction of Taliban officials, television stations have already stopped broadcasting plays and soap operas depicting women.
