3% divorces in Mumbai caused by traffic jams: Former Maharashtra CM’s wife

Traffic bottlenecks in Mumbai are responsible for 3% of divorces, according to Amruta Fadnavis, wife of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

She had expressed her views on the state of the city’s roads and transportation infrastructure to a group of journalists.

“I am saying this as a common citizen. Once I go out, I see several issues including potholes, traffic. Due to traffic, people are unable to give time to their families and 3 percent of divorces in Mumbai are happening due to it, so I advise the state government to pay more attention to its mistakes,” Fadnavis said.

Due to traffic delays, people do not have enough time to spend with their families. She went on to say that this leads to divorce. Priyanka Chaturvedi, the leader of the Shiva Sena, has responded by mocking this remark. “The lady who claims three percent of Mumbaikars are divorcing owing to traffic on the roadways wins the best (il)logic of the day award,” she tweeted.

Several tweets on social media have also been made condemning Amruta Fadnavis.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar slammed Amruta Fadnavis’ remark, saying, “there might be numerous causes for divorce, but this is the first time I’ve heard this.”

She claimed that Amruta Fadnavis has been making weird statements in recent months, claiming that the BJP is attempting to tarnish Mumbai.

Kishori Pednekar stated that they have never claimed that Mumbai’s roads are smooth, but that potholes are corrected as soon as they are informed of them. However, the mayor clarified that the claim that people are divorcing because of traffic congestion is incorrect.

Over the last decade, the city of Mumbai has averaged 22 divorce petitions each day, according to the family court. From 2011 to 2020, the average number of divorces filed in Mumbai was between 7500 and 8300. In 2011, the figure was 7515, but by 2019 it had risen to 7727. However, due to the COVID lockdown last year, the number was lowered to 5059.
