6 Pakistani peacekeepers martyred in helicopter crash in Congo

The Pakistan Army helicopter was assigned to the United Nations Organization’s Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo for peacekeeping missions.

According to a statement released here on Wednesday, six Pakistan Army servicemen were among eight UN peacekeepers martyred in a helicopter crash while on a UN peacekeeping deployment in Congo.

The Pakistan Army helicopter was on peacekeeping duty with the UN Organization Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) when it crashed on March 29 during a reconnaissance mission, according to the Foreign Office.

“Eight UN peacekeepers were on board, including six Pakistani troops, and none of them survived the tragic collision,” it stated.

The specific cause of the tragedy is yet unknown.

“We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of international peace and security,” the FO added.

It went on to say that 157 of Pakistan’s bravest peacekeepers had died in the line of duty while serving in UN assignments thus far.
