In a major security lapse, at least 12 prisoners have managed to run away from the premises of district courts in Model Town area of Lahore.
Reportedly, prisoners were brought for a court hearing from Camp and Kot Lakhpat jails. Police held them in the court lock-up till their case hearing.
Later, in a news conference, Lahore Police Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mustansar Feroze said the under-trial prisoners were being kept in the court lock-up when a fight erupted between two groups. He added that the prisoners started agitating once they were brought out of the lock-up. They also hurled stones at each other and also threw tables, chairs and other objects at each other.
The police officer clarified that two out of the 12 captives have been caught and a search operation is in progress to arrest the others. A probe is also being executed in order to take disciplinary action against negligent police officials.
In 2017, a similar incident happened in Karachi in which two prisoners fled from the judicial complex of city’s Central Prison.
