US Senate Confirms Nusrat Choudhury as the First Muslim Female Federal Judge

Nusrat Choudhury, a civil rights attorney, was narrowly confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the Eastern District of New York’s U.S. District Court, making her the nation’s first female Muslim federal judge who is also of Bangladeshi descent.

Choudhury, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois, secured confirmation with a slim margin of 50-49 votes. She will become a federal judge in America for the first time as well. During the initial stages of her professional journey, Choudhury dedicated a significant portion of her tenure to addressing racial justice and national security issues as a valued member of the national ACLU. From 2018 to 2020, she served as the racial justice program organization’s deputy director.

In January 2022, she received a nomination from U.S. President Joe Biden to serve on a federal court. Chuck Schumer, a leading Democrat in the Senate, said in a statement that Choudhury has the skills and dedication needed to serve as a federal judge with professionalism and integrity.

She will adhere to the law and administer justice with fairness and deep respect for the rule of law, according to her experience as a talented and committed civil rights litigator. She encountered resistance from some Senate Republicans because she provided conflicting information regarding whether she had said at a 2015 talk at Princeton University that police killings of unarmed Black men happened “every day.”

Later, she wrote a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee claiming that such a statement is incompatible with her feelings of “deep respect” for police enforcement.

In addition to the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which handles appeals from the federal courts in Vermont, Connecticut, and New York, Choudhury worked as a law clerk for a judge in the nearby Southern District of New York trial court. U.S. District Judge Zahid Quraishi, who was chosen by Biden, is the nation’s first Muslim judge. In 2021, the Senate approved his appointment to the New Jersey federal trial court.
