TLP chief Saad Rizvi secures release from jail

Succumbing to pressure from extremist religious parties, government has released Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) head Hafiz Saad Hussain Rizvi from Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

The release comes on the first death anniversary of Rizvi’s father and founder of TLP, Maulana Khadim Rizvi.

TLP spokesperson Mufti Abid said that Rizvi has arrived at the party’s headquarters in Lahore where he was greeted by a large number of workers.

The TLP head was released after the government withdrew a reference lodged in the Supreme Court’s federal review board about his arrest and the exclusion of his name from the Fourth Schedule — a list of proscribed individuals who are accused of terrorism or sectarianism under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997.

Police had arrested him on April 12, 2021 before the scheduled demonstrations by the TLP. The next day, a first information report was lodged against him under sections of the ATA.

The TLP head’s release comes after another prolong demonstrations by the party and an accord made with the government last month.
