Times World’s Top universities list is out now

For the 11th year in a row, Harvard University has topped a poll of the world’s best universities based on reputation.

For Times Higher Education‘s (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2021, nearly 11,000 academics from 128 countries have named the universities they believe are best for research and teaching in their profession.

With 57 institutions listed in the rankings, the United States remains the most well-represented country, while the United Kingdom comes in second with 25.

The top six remain unchanged, with Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge, and Berkeley described as “a breakaway group of global university super brands” by THE.

China is a significant newcomer this year.

Tsinghua University in Beijing has climbed three places to number ten this year, becoming the first Chinese institution to do so.

THE’s Chief Knowledge Officer, Phil Baty, believes this is noteworthy. “As mainland China becomes a more appealing offer for academics and students to work and study in the coming years, we could see a shift in the balance of power in global higher education.” This might hurt countries like the United States and the United Kingdom not only in terms of luring talent, but also in terms of finance and status on the global stage.”

Six of the nine universities listed in the Netherlands have improved their rankings over the previous year, while the remaining three have maintained their positions on the table. Delft University of Technology has climbed into the top 50 universities in the world for 2021.

Oxford University — The University of Oxford advances two places to third in the same year that it assisted in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

China – “Mainland China is the biggest success storey in the ranking,” according to THE, with its “breakthrough result” this year. With seven universities in the top 100, including Peking University (15th), China now has a total of 17 participants in the table, making it the third most represented country for 2021.

India – four universities make the cut this year, including the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which makes its first appearance in the rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, which climbs two ranking bands to 126-150th, and the Indian Institute of Science, which enters the top 100.

South America — Although Brazil is the table’s only representative, both of the country’s ranked universities have improved this year, with the University of So Paulo rising nine spots to 81st and the University of Campinas rising from 175th to 151st.
