According to Sony, the most popular PlayStation video game is the latest Spider-Man release. In a blog post, Spider-Man 2 announced that it sold over 2.5 million physical and digital copies on its first day of release.
Since its release on Friday for the PlayStation 5, the game, created by PlayStation-owned Insomniac Games, has received rave reviews. However, its primary story takes about 15 hours to finish, which has drawn some criticism. In terms of video game time, that amounts to about 40 hours when considering side content. However, certain games released this year, such as Baldur’s Gate 3, have the potential to be played for hundreds of hours.
Spider-Man 2 has received appreciation for its portrayal of Puerto Rican culture, although backlash followed when the island’s flag was mistaken for the Cuban flag in the protagonist’s home. Developers have promised to address the error. Despite its name, Spider-Man 2 is the third game in the series, having been released in 2020 and 2018.
The latest installment takes place in a virtual rendition of New York City, similar to its predecessors. However, players can now choose to take on the roles of Miles Morales or Peter Parker, two of the well-known superhero’s alter egos. “Insomniac Games is committed to providing players with captivating and inventive gameplay experiences,” stated Eric Lempel, Head of Business Operations at PlayStation.

Spider-Man 2 was the top physical video game release in the UK last week, with better-boxed sales than the other titles. Currently, it holds one of the top ratings among PlayStation 5 games on the game aggregator Metacritic.
Despite being the most notable physical launch on the PS5 in the current year, the game hasn’t achieved the remarkable triumph of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which accomplished the sale of more than 10 million copies in just three days. That game, which Nintendo released in May, is still the most popular physical video game launch in the UK for 2023. Only a portion of the 2.5 million copies of Spider-Man 2 that have been sold physically; the majority, according to Christopher Dring, head of the gaming news website GamesIndustry.biz, would have been downloaded. He stated that digital downloads account for the majority of game sales nowadays.
The market was already trending in this direction before the pandemic. In the UK, in 2019, over half of games were sold digitally, and the other half in traditional retailers. Since 2020, the number of games downloaded has increased to over 70%. Millions of boxed games are still sold annually, but you can’t download a controller or system.
