During the key session to elect Imran Khan’s successor, Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq apologised for pronouncing the name of deposed premier Nawaz Sharif instead of Shehbaz Sharif in an apparent slip of the tongue.
Before conducting voting in the National Assembly to elect the next prime minister, Sadiq read a document holding the name of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) President Shehbaz Sharif.
On the other hand, the Speaker mentioned Nawaz Sharif, who is now in London.
Sadiq apologised for his mistake, saying he was “in his heart as well as his mind” when he realised he had mispronounced the name.
A couple of PML-(N) parliamentarians and PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz were seen in the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, holding portraits of Nawaz Sharif to demonstrate their support.
After rival candidate Shah Mahmood Qureshi indicated that his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party would boycott the election and stage a walkout, Shehbaz Sharif, 70, was elected unchallenged as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan by Parliament.
