According to Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani, the Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu’s first international flight from Dubai is scheduled to arrive at the city’s airport on August 14, the day of Pakistan’s Independence.
The runways at Gilgit and Chitral airports are too small for long-haul flights; hence, Skardu Airport is the only one in the nation’s northern region that can accommodate larger aircraft. However, despite Imran Khan, the former prime minister, designating Skardu Airport as “international” back in December 2021, it was unable to reach its full potential because there was no suitable refueling station for foreign flights. The problem has been fixed, though, and the refueling station is now anticipated to open on August 11th.
A recent increase in tourism to the area may be seen through the 12 Airbus A320 flights that recently connected Skardu with important Pakistani cities. In a subsequent update, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) made it clear that polio vaccination cards are not necessary for travelers to and from Skardu.
The CAA cautioned against falling for phony web offers that claimed to provide such cards, admonishing that there is no such necessity. Instead, travelers should ask the airlines about the health regulations of the country they plan to visit, particularly concerning polio vaccinations.
