Sindh Textbook Board to Use QR Codes to Combat Counterfeit Textbooks

Quick-response codes, or QR codes, are being used in textbooks as a security mechanism by the Sindh Textbook Board to guarantee the validity of books sold in the marketplace.

This endeavor hopes to address the problem of market-wide fake books. Agha Sohail, the chairman of the Sindh Textbook Board, emphasized the significance of implementing QR code security to differentiate between authentic and counterfeit books. The Sindh province will include the QR code function in textbooks for the ninth and tenth grades.

Students and parents can use their mobile devices to scan the QR code to easily confirm the legitimacy of the books. This novel methodology will provide a trustworthy way to validate the reliability of educational resources. The chairman announced that each book would be given a special serial number for the academic year 2023-2024 and that this number will be linked to the matching QR code.

Quick-response codes, sometimes known as QR codes, are two-dimensional matrix barcodes that were created by the Japanese company Denso Wave in 1994 to label automotive parts.

In recent years, QR codes have increasingly been incorporated into consumer advertising and marketing. They can be scanned with a smartphone, which converts the code into a useful form, such as a website URL, eliminating the need for manual entry.

The Sindh Textbook Board has taken an active step to ensure the reliability and legitimacy of educational resources by incorporating QR codes into its textbooks. This initiative aims to provide instructors, parents, and students with a reliable mechanism to verify the accuracy of textbooks, thereby promoting a safe learning environment.
