Security Advisory: NoteCam Lite- GPS Memo Camera App Identified as Potential Threat for Espionage Activities

In a proactive effort to safeguard sensitive national security information, the Government of Pakistan has issued a cybersecurity advisory to government departments, officials, and staff members regarding the utilization of online camera applications.

The advisory specifically underscores the potential security risk associated with the NoteCam Lite- GPS Memo Camera app, which has been identified as a tool employed by adversarial intelligence agencies for gathering data, including grid references of military installations and other confidential locations. Created by Derekr Corporation and accessible on the Google Play store since May 12, 2015, NoteCam Lite- GPS Memo Camera has amassed over 10 million downloads.

The application incorporates GPS data, furnishing details such as latitude, longitude, altitude, accuracy, time, and user comments. Nevertheless, the cybersecurity advisory highlights the comprehensive permissions of the application, including but not limited to accessing precise locations, the capability to read, modify, and delete content on SD cards, permission for advertising ID, running foreground services, conducting Google Play license checks, full network access, and additional functionalities.

The advisory strongly recommends that government officials and employees refrain from using NoteCam Lite- GPS Memo Camera and its pro version, NoteCam Pro-Photo with notes. It explicitly states that employing this app may be treated as prohibited, and individuals are warned against capturing images of sensitive civil, military, and other crucial installations and their surroundings.
