Photographer Killed after Motocross bike flies threw barrier at championship event

After a motorbike murdered a “passionate” photographer during the British Motocross Championships, a family has been left devastated.

When a rider fell from his bike while performing a jump, Simon Mitchell, who was in his 50s, was killed when the vehicle went through a bale-based barrier. At the event on Sunday in Swindon, which drew 10,000 people, a marshal in his 60s also sustained a significant injury. His family stated that Mr. Mitchell was “taking pictures in a place he loved.”

Photography and motocross “came before everything else in life,” according to his sister Nikki Dancey. In the future, she said, “I think that will bring us some comfort,” to know that he was doing what he loved when he was killed.

He had a great fondness for Foxhill and cherished that occasion. That was his home. She continued by saying that his demise had “devastated” his family. After the incident at around 14:50 BST, the tournament was called off. A representative for the event stated that it occurred after the Premier Class Race. Both men were apart from spectators, behind a specified marshal position. The Langrish MXC-organized event was abruptly stopped.

The rider wasn’t wounded in the collision. An inquiry by the police and the Auto Cycle Union has begun. A 25-year motocross veteran who spoke on behalf of the event claimed that non-rider fatalities were “very uncommon in motocross” and that he could “not remember a fatality that wasn’t a rider.”

The series’ promoter RHL Activities posted a statement on its website that read: “Langrish MX Club, are heartbroken to announce the loss of Simon Mitchell, a guy well known within the motocross world. Simon’s family and friends are currently in the thoughts and prayers of everyone involved. “It is a tragedy,” the event’s promoter, Gareth Hockey, continued. Here in town, Simon was well-liked. Mr. Hockey stated that Mr. Mitchell and his family were in his thoughts. According to Mr. Hockey, “He had a very strong character.”

He exuded great joy. Simon appeared to be most at ease here. As with all of us, he enjoyed shooting pictures and playing the sport. The third round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship took place throughout the weekend.

The Langrish MCC is located in Foxhill, one of the top motocross courses in the UK, which has hosted several competitions. A variety of jumps, berms, and obstacles can be found on the 1.5-mile (2.4-km) long track, which is renowned for its difficult terrain, steep hills, and tricky parts.
