As the mayor of a Paris neighborhood, he and his family escaped during the fifth night of nationwide turmoil following the police shooting of a juvenile of North African heritage on Tuesday.
However, rioters ransacked his home, set fire to his car, and threw fireworks at his wife and young children. Vincent Jeanbrun, a 39-year-old right-leaning mayor of the southern suburb of L’Hay-les-Roses, was at the town hall when his home was attacked, while his wife Melanie and children were inside sound asleep. According to the local public prosecutor, the attackers drove their car towards the suburban home but were stopped by a modest wall enclosing the outdoor terrace of the building.
They then set fire to their car, and fireworks were fired toward Jeanbrun’s wife and two young children, aged 5 and 7, as they fled through the backyard. The mayor claimed, “My wife and one of my children were hurt while trying to shield themselves and escape the attackers.” Reporters were informed that an investigation into an attempted murder had been initiated by the local prosecutor, but nobody has been detained as a suspect. Since the shooting on Tuesday, Jeanbrun’s town hall has been under siege and is being defended by barricades and barbed wire. Jeanbrun encountered well-wishers from the community when out and about a few hours after the tragedy.
Furthermore, he made his way through the town’s covered market, left in ruins by the chaos that ensued. Following the gathering, Jeanbrun took a stroll and ran across some of the neighborhood’s supporters. The mayor looked noticeably upset as he passed through the ruined covered market of the town, which had been destroyed in the upheaval.
Stay strong, Mr. Mayor, a man said as he gave words of encouragement. We’re here to support you. The mayor shared his shock at having encountered such a situation after another observer offered his wife good wishes. In reaction, she said, “It’s truly appalling.”
